KUALA LUMPUR, November 6, 2026 – Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said Malaysia remains committed to exploring deeper cooperation with the United Kingdom, especially in the fast-moving artificial intelligence (AI) era, after attending a reception marking King Charles III’s 78th birthday.
In a thread shared on X on Friday, Gobind said the United Kingdom has long been a diplomatic partner of Malaysia, grounded in mutual understanding, respect and close cooperation across many fields.
He said he was glad to attend the reception the previous evening hosted by the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ajay Sharma. Themed “Great British Theatre”, reflecting King Charles III’s interest in theatre and the performing arts, the evening featured theatre performances, chamber orchestra music and British food, culture and ceremonial touches.
Platform for bilateral ties
“This event was also a platform to celebrate the diplomatic relations of both countries for our shared interest and well-being. The Malaysian Government will remain committed and open to exploring more opportunities for cooperation with the UK, especially in the AI era that continues to develop rapidly today,” Gobind wrote.
Photographs in the thread show Gobind greeting and speaking with Ajay Sharma and other guests at the reception, against a stage backdrop styled around British theatre.
Malaysia and the United Kingdom share historical links and an ongoing partnership covering trade, education, defence and technology. Gobind, who leads the digital portfolio, framed the birthday reception as both a cultural evening and a chance to underline interest in AI-era collaboration under the government’s MADANI and AI Nation agenda.
King Charles III, who turned 78, has long been associated with the arts; the High Commission’s theatre theme followed that interest. Gobind’s post does not announce a new agreement; it records his attendance and restates Malaysia’s openness to further UK cooperation, particularly on AI.
British High Commissioner Ajay Sharma has hosted national-day and royal birthday receptions in Kuala Lumpur as part of the High Commission’s public calendar. Gobind’s attendance as Digital Minister sits alongside Malaysia’s broader push to position itself in AI, digital infrastructure and skills — themes he has repeatedly linked to the AI Nation agenda in other government programmes.
The United Kingdom remains one of Malaysia’s long-standing partners in education, professional services and technology investment. Gobind’s post does not name new projects or funding figures; it records the reception, the theatre theme and a political signal that Kuala Lumpur wants more UK cooperation as AI reshapes industry and government.
