AUSTIN — Pierre Gasly sits 10th in this season’s drivers’ standings, but the Alpine driver came out on top against both McLarens in a game of giant UNO, in a video released by Formula 1 ahead of this weekend’s United States Grand Prix.
The sport’s official X account posted the clip on Tuesday (Oct 20) with the caption: “Big cards = BIG win”, adding: “Pierre strategised his way to victory in Giant UNO – watch now on our YouTube channel”, alongside the hashtag #F1 and a tag for Alpine. The clip’s preview image shows a delighted Gasly, in Alpine blue, celebrating with both fists clenched as a McLaren driver lifts an oversized UNO card, with a Pirelli gantry and Azerbaijan Grand Prix branding in the background.
Gasly faced reigning world champion Lando Norris and his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri. According to Motorsport.com, the trash talk began early. “Stop looking at my cards, man,” Gasly laughed, as the drivers peered at each other’s oversized hands.
The Frenchman worked his way down to his last card first after catching Norris with a +4, even as the two McLaren drivers began to team up against him. He finished the job soon after, leaving Norris and Piastri to battle it out, a contest Piastri eventually won after teaming up with Gasly to leave Norris holding cards. “That’s the first ever UNO game I’ve lost in my life,” Norris said. Asked afterwards how the game had gone, Gasly said: “Not much argument. Usually with my family it goes down pretty badly over Christmas.”
The match-up carried an extra twist. Piastri was Alpine’s reserve driver before the FIA’s Contract Recognition Board ruled in 2022 that his only valid contract for the following season was with McLaren, while Gasly joined Alpine in 2023. The video is part of a commercial tie-up between Formula 1 and Mattel, which began with the Hot Wheels brand before expanding to UNO at the end of the 2025 season. The special edition features drivers, cars, helmets, team principals and reserve drivers from every team.
Victories on track have been harder to come by for Gasly in 2026. He is 10th in the drivers’ standings on 41 points, the best of the Alpine drivers, with team-mate Franco Colapinto 12th on 27. Gasly finished just outside the points in 11th at the Singapore Grand Prix on Oct 11, while Colapinto retired. Alpine are sixth in the constructors’ championship on 68 points.
Austin has not always been kind to the Frenchman. At the 2021 United States Grand Prix, then driving for AlphaTauri, he retired after 14 laps. Gasly, who won the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, will be hoping for a better outcome on Sunday as Alpine look to add to their tally.
At the front, Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli leads the championship on 340 points, 102 clear of team-mate George Russell, while Norris is sixth on 201 and Piastri seventh on 138.
The United States Grand Prix weekend runs from Oct 23 to 25, with qualifying at 4pm local time on Saturday and the 56-lap race starting at 3pm on Sunday, which is 4am on Monday (Oct 26) in Malaysia. The original Formula 1 post can be viewed on X: https://x.com/F1/status/2112574570167210344.
