KUALA LUMPUR, May 15, 2026 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has firmly stated that fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, should not be granted any pardon over his alleged role in the 1MDB scandal, citing the immense damage inflicted on the country.
Fahmi, who is also the MADANI Government spokesperson, echoed the stance of 1MDB Task Force chairman Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, insisting that Jho Low must return to Malaysia to face justice in court rather than receive clemency.
“Jho Low should not be given any consideration for pardon because the damage and hardship he brought upon the country are far too great,” Fahmi told reporters after the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) Excellence Awards ceremony and Lembah Pantai Teachers’ Day Celebration here yesterday.
“He must return and be brought before the courts in Malaysia to face justice. That is what should happen,” he added.
The remarks come amid reports that Jho Low is seeking a presidential pardon from US President Donald Trump. The issue was raised during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting but not formally discussed then; it is expected to be addressed at next week’s session.
Fahmi stressed there should be “no forgiveness or clemency” for the businessman, who has been on the run since 2015 and faces multiple charges linked to the multibillion-ringgit 1MDB financial scandal.
The government’s position aligns with calls for accountability, as Jho Low remains a key figure in ongoing investigations into the alleged misappropriation of funds from the sovereign wealth fund.
