MANCHESTER, November 8, 2026 — Patrick Dorgu headed in a 96th-minute equaliser as Manchester United twice came from two goals down to draw 4-4 with Aston Villa in an extraordinary Premier League match at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Villa led 2-0 inside four minutes. Alysson beat goalkeeper Senne Lammens after just 59 seconds, and Lammens then spilled another Alysson shot for Nicolas Jackson to score. The Premier League said on X it was the earliest any team had been 2-0 up against Manchester United in the competition.
United hit back before half-time. Matheus Cunha was brought down by Boubacar Kamara and Bruno Fernandes converted the penalty in the 16th minute, and former Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans equalised in the 44th minute from Noussair Mazraoui’s cross.
Villa took control again early in the second half. Diogo Dalot fouled Alysson and John McGinn scored from the spot in the 48th minute, and five minutes later Leon Goretzka bundled in his first Premier League goal after Leny Yoro’s header towards his own goal was pushed onto the post by Lammens.
With many fans already leaving, substitutes Joshua Zirkzee and Dorgu turned the game again. Zirkzee swept in during the 92nd minute, and when Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki flapped at a late corner, Dorgu headed the equaliser.
Carrick had made a triple change on 65 minutes, sending on Shea Lacey, Dorgu and Mason Mount for Tielemans, Amad Diallo and Dalot, The Guardian reported. Before the final whistle, referee Chris Kavanagh also sent off what appeared to be a member of Villa’s technical staff, and Emery later pointed to Lammens knocking into Suzuki before the equaliser, although no foul was given.
Protests against the club’s owners continued inside the ground, with a banner in the Stretford End aimed at the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe reading: “Your funeral not ours, sell up”.
“We kind of beat ourselves a little bit with the moments really that we’re giving away,” United head coach Michael Carrick told reporters, Sky Sports reported. Villa manager Unai Emery said: “Angry, of course. To accept to lose in the last minutes two goals, it is difficult.”
Former United captain Roy Keane told Sky Sports the team deserved some credit for their fight. “They kept going until the end,” he said, but added that defensively the starts to both halves had been “so, so bad”.
The point lifts Villa into the top half of the table, but United go into the international break in the relegation zone. According to The Guardian, they are 18th and have not won a league match since beating Ipswich 5-2 on August 30.
