BEIJING May 13, 2026 — China has once again stressed that the protracted conflict involving Iran has produced no victors, reinforcing Beijing’s longstanding call for an immediate ceasefire and a return to dialogue as regional tensions persist despite a fragile truce.
In an exclusive interview with Russia’s TASS news agency, Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui stated unequivocally: “There are no winners in the conflict around Iran.”
The ambassador went further, referencing President Xi Jinping’s recently outlined four principles for peace in the Middle East: peaceful coexistence, respect for state sovereignty, adherence to international law, and ensuring regional development and security.
China, the world’s largest importer of Iranian crude oil, has been deeply affected by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and fluctuating energy supplies triggered by the conflict that erupted on February 28, 2026. U.S. and Israeli strikes targeted key Iranian sites, including the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, prompting Iranian retaliation and a cycle of escalation. A ceasefire was announced around April 8, but sporadic skirmishes, mutual blockades, and shipping disruptions continue to threaten global energy markets and economic stability.
Beijing has consistently positioned itself as a proponent of de-escalation since the outbreak of hostilities, repeatedly condemning unilateral military actions and advocating for political and diplomatic solutions. Foreign Ministry spokespersons have echoed this stance, warning that prolonged fighting serves no one’s interests and harms regional and global security.
Analysts note that China’s neutral yet proactive diplomacy reflects both strategic economic interests — protecting discounted Iranian oil imports critical to its manufacturing sector — and broader geopolitical goals. With U.S. President Donald Trump scheduled to visit Beijing later this week for high-stakes talks with President Xi Jinping, Beijing’s latest comments are seen as a clear signal to prioritize stability over escalation amid ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiations.
Ambassador Zhang also called on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid slowing the pace of talks aimed at reopening vital shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz.
As the Iran conflict enters its third month, China’s message remains firm: war offers no winners, only shared losses. Beijing continues to push for comprehensive ceasefire efforts and renewed negotiations to restore peace in the Gulf region.
Life News Agency will continue to monitor developments from Beijing, Moscow, and the Middle East.
