Las Vegas — Original Spaceballs stars Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis shared a warm on-stage (and off-stage) reunion at CinemaCon on Thursday, April 16, 2026, sparking excitement among theater owners and fans alike for the long-awaited sci-fi comedy sequel.
Variety captured the moment in a photo showing the two legends posing together — Pullman with a salt-and-pepper beard in a casual dark jacket, and Moranis sporting his signature glasses and a sharp vest — marking one of the most nostalgic highlights of the annual convention.
The reunion comes as Amazon MGM Studios officially revealed the sequel’s title, Spaceballs: The New One, and confirmed key details for its theatrical release on April 23, 2027 — timed perfectly for the 40th anniversary of the original 1987 Mel Brooks cult classic.
Pullman will reprise his role as the heroic Lone Starr, while Moranis returns as the villainous Dark Helmet. They are joined by returning cast members Daphne Zuniga (Princess Vespa), Mel Brooks (Yogurt), and George Wyner. New additions to the cast include Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan.
The film is being directed by Josh Greenbaum from a script by Gad, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit, with Mel Brooks, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and others producing.
Moranis, who stepped back from full-time acting for years to raise his family and later faced a well-publicized assault in 2020, has described the project as a joyful return. Fans in the replies to Variety’s post echoed the sentiment, with many writing, “It’s wild seeing Rick Moranis out and about now. I’m so happy he’s back,” and “Legends!”
CinemaCon attendees also got a first look at the film’s playful new logo, further building buzz for what Brooks has teased as “just like the old one… but newer.”
Spaceballs: The New One is expected to hit theaters worldwide on April 23, 2027.
