AUSTIN — Formula 1 has declared that the 2026 world championship is on the line for the first time this season, marking the United States Grand Prix as Kimi Antonelli’s first opportunity to wrap up the drivers’ title.
The sport’s official X account posted a striking graphic on Saturday (Oct 24) with the caption “For the first time in 2026… 👀” and the hashtags #F1 and #USGP. The image shows a lone figure in Mercedes race overalls and helmet walking through a shaft of golden light against a black background, above the F1 logo and the words “For the first time… Championship point.”
The message is clear. Antonelli, the 20-year-old Mercedes driver, arrives at the Circuit of The Americas leading the standings on 340 points, 102 clear of team-mate George Russell on 238. Lewis Hamilton, now at Ferrari, is third on 229, with Max Verstappen fourth on 221. It is the first race this year at which the mathematics allow the title to be settled.
The route to the crown this weekend is narrow. With 150 points available before Austin and 125 left after it, Antonelli must extend his lead by 23 points to put it beyond reach, which means only a victory will do. He will be champion on Sunday if he wins the race, Russell finishes ninth or lower and Hamilton finishes fifth or lower.
Even a tie on points would fall Antonelli’s way. Sky Sports noted that a win in Austin would be his ninth of the season, while Russell has three, so the Briton could reach at most eight victories in the remaining races. Race wins are the first tie-breaker, which is why a ninth-place finish for Russell, leaving him exactly 125 points behind, would still be enough.
The stakes go beyond a single title. Antonelli would become the youngest world champion in the sport’s history, beating the record Sebastian Vettel set in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days. According to The Independent, he would also be only the third driver, after Hamilton and Jacques Villeneuve, to win the championship in just his second season. He has eight grand prix victories and 14 podiums so far this year.
Friday’s practice running suggested he has the pace to keep the possibility alive. Charles Leclerc topped both sessions for Ferrari, but Antonelli was just 0.042s behind in second practice, with Verstappen third. Russell, who was involved in a close call with Leclerc that the stewards decided needed no further action, ended FP2 in fifth, one place behind Hamilton.
Antonelli has played down his chances of finishing the job in Texas, saying earlier in the week that it would take “a perfect weekend” and poor results for his rivals. If the title is not decided on Sunday, the next opportunity comes at the Mexico City Grand Prix on 1 November, followed by Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi, although the Qatar and Abu Dhabi rounds depend on the situation in the Middle East.
Final practice in Austin begins at 12:30 local time on Saturday, with qualifying at 4pm local time, which is 5am on Sunday in Malaysia. The 56-lap race starts at 3pm on Sunday (Oct 25), or 4am on Monday (Oct 26) Malaysian time.
