LIVERPOOL, November 1, 2026 – Arsenal beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday thanks to an early goal from Kai Havertz, claiming their first Premier League win at the ground since September 2012 and moving back to the top of the table.
The Premier League marked the result on its official X account, saying “The champions are on top of the Premier League once again”, and noting that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was still playing for the club the last time they won a league match at Anfield.
Havertz pounces after Alisson error
The only goal came in the 16th minute. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker played a loose pass out of his area that Arsenal quickly won back, and the ball was worked out to Declan Rice on the right. Rice’s low cross across the face of goal was turned in at the far post by Havertz.
The goal took Havertz past Ilkay Gundogan as the highest-scoring German player in Premier League history, according to the Premier League and ESPN.
Liverpool pressure, but no reward
Liverpool dominated much of the first half after falling behind. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya kept out a header from Virgil van Dijk, the hosts had two penalty appeals turned down, and Florian Wirtz’s free-kick from a narrow angle crashed against the crossbar, BBC Sport reported.
The home side kept up the pressure after the break, but Arsenal’s defence, led by Gabriel and Ezri Konsa, held firm. According to Arsenal’s official match report, Liverpool did not manage a single shot on target all afternoon.
Arsenal remained a threat on the counter-attack. Christos Tzolis, back after a month out, forced a fine one-handed save from Alisson late in the match with a first-time shot towards the far corner, while Noni Madueke was also denied by the Liverpool goalkeeper in the first half.
The Premier League also highlighted a milestone for the hosts, with 19-year-old Trey Nyoni making his first Premier League start for Liverpool.
Three points clear at the top
The full-time table shared by the Premier League showed Arsenal top on 24 points from nine matches, three points ahead of Manchester City, who lost 1-0 at home to Brighton on Saturday. Brighton are third on 19 points, Chelsea fourth on 16, and Liverpool fifth on 15, nine points behind the leaders.
The Premier League noted that Arsenal are off to a better start than in last season’s title-winning campaign. Arsenal’s official website said the victory was the club’s 300th Premier League away win.
What comes next
Arsenal travel to Slavia Prague in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday before hosting Hull City in the Premier League next Saturday, ahead of the November international break.
For Liverpool, the defeat leaves them with ground to make up in the title race after a match in which their pressure brought plenty of corners and crosses but very few clear chances against a well-organised Arsenal side.
