KUALA LUMPUR, 28 Sept 2026 — Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, wife of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, died this morning at the age of 100.
She passed away at about 9.20am at the National Heart Institute (IJN). The news was confirmed by her son, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, conveyed their condolences in a post on X.
“We knew the late Tun as Kak Hasmah — gentle in speech, yet steadfast and strong in spirit, always caring for those around her with a mother’s love,” Anwar wrote.
He added that the nation has lost a motherly figure close to the hearts of the people.
In a later official statement, Anwar announced that the government would accord her a state funeral befitting a national dignitary. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and the Chief of Defence Forces were directed to assist with the arrangements.
The burial is scheduled for this afternoon at Pusara Negarawan in Precinct 20, Putrajaya.
His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and the Raja Permaisuri Agong also expressed their condolences to the family.
Tun Dr Siti Hasmah was born on 12 July 1926 in Klang. She was among the earliest Malay women doctors in the country after graduating from the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore. The couple married in 1956 and had seven children.
