KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, August 15, 2025 – The Democratic Action Party (DAP) has strongly condemned the actions of Akmal Salleh, who led a march and demonstration in front of a metal shop in Kepala Batas yesterday, despite explicit warnings from the Inspector-General of Police and the Penang Chief Police Officer against holding any gatherings.

DAP Secretary-General Loke Siew Fook described the protest as an act of bullying and intimidation against the shop owner, who is under investigation and has already issued an apology for an error in flag installation. Loke criticized Akmal’s disregard for police warnings as a challenge to the rule of law, which disrupted public order and caused distress among local traders, forcing some to close their businesses early.
“Such actions exceed legal boundaries and societal norms in Malaysia’s multiracial community. Appropriate punishment must be meted out for such excessive behavior,” Loke stated in a media release.
DAP has instructed its Youth Wing (DAPSY) nationwide to lodge police reports over the incident, citing violations under Section 503 of the Penal Code (criminal intimidation), Section 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace), and Section 505 (statements conducing to public mischief). Additional reports will be filed under newly introduced anti-bullying provisions, namely Section 507B (causing distress, fear, or anxiety to victims) and Section 507C (uttering words likely to cause disturbance, distress, fear, or anxiety).
Loke reiterated that the Jalur Gemilang, as a symbol of national sovereignty, must be flown correctly and with respect. However, he emphasized that resorting to threats, bullying, or actions that incite tension is not the way to resolve such issues.
