JAKARTA, July 29, 2025 – In a landmark address at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim made his debut as ASEAN Chair for 2025, underscoring Malaysia’s unwavering commitment to the bloc’s enduring vision and unity. The event marked a pivotal moment for Malaysia as it assumes a leadership role in navigating the region through a complex global landscape.
As ASEAN Chair, Malaysia has spearheaded a critical diplomatic breakthrough, brokering an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, averting a potentially devastating conflict. Facilitated by active engagement from global powers China and the United States, this achievement highlights the power of diplomacy in fostering peace and stability, with Malaysia at the forefront.

In his address, Anwar emphasized the challenges facing the world, including great power tensions, exhausting geo-economic rivalries, and the erosion of multilateralism. “In such a landscape, ASEAN cannot afford to weaken, fracture, or lag behind,” he declared, urging the bloc to remain united and amplify its regional voice on the global stage.
Malaysia’s leadership will prioritize key initiatives, including advancing the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), accelerating the ASEAN Power Grid, and finalizing the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement. These efforts aim to secure an open, fair, and sustainable economic future for the region’s 660 million people.
“ASEAN will not merely follow the global order—it will lead with resolve,” Anwar asserted, affirming Malaysia’s commitment to steering the bloc toward greater resilience, prosperity, and global peace. Under its chairmanship, Malaysia is poised to ensure ASEAN stands stronger and strides forward in unison.
