KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, July 23, 2025 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has fulfilled his pledge to reduce fuel prices, announcing a 6-sen per litre cut effective October, as part of broader efforts to ease the cost-of-living burden on Malaysians. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail defended the prime minister’s record, highlighting significant economic improvements that have paved the way for this move.

Addressing public criticism over Anwar’s earlier promise to lower fuel prices, Saifuddin acknowledged the challenges inherited by the administration. “When Anwar took over, the nation faced a ballooning national debt, high inflation, elevated unemployment, and low foreign direct investment (FDI),” he said. “It took time to stabilise the economy, as these were prerequisites to delivering on his promises.”
Saifuddin noted that recent economic indicators reflect progress, with inflation now at 1.5%, FDI reaching historic highs, and the ringgit strengthening against the US dollar. “These conducive conditions have enabled the prime minister to deliver tangible benefits to the rakyat,” he said, pointing to the upcoming fuel price reduction as evidence of responsible leadership.
In addition to the fuel price cut, Anwar has introduced other relief measures. A cash assistance programme will benefit 22 million Malaysians aged 18 and above, targeting lower-income groups who spend heavily on essentials like food. “This cash aid will stimulate the economy by increasing market circulation,” Saifuddin explained.
The government has also deferred toll rate hikes until the end of the year to further alleviate cost-of-living pressures. Saifuddin emphasised that transportation, alongside utilities, food, healthcare, and education, significantly impacts living costs. “By cushioning these expenses—through fuel price cuts, cash aid, and toll deferments—we are directly reducing the financial burden on the rakyat,” he said.
Saifuddin also praised Anwar’s focus on curbing financial leakages, eliminating wasteful spending, and combating corruption. “These efforts have strengthened the nation’s financial position, enabling the government to roll out these initiatives,” he added.
The Home Minister expressed confidence that these measures would provide immediate relief and drive economic vitality, particularly for lower-income households, while reinforcing Anwar’s commitment to delivering on his promises.
