NEW YORK, November 8 (LNA) – The voice cast of Netflix’s animated Cinderella reimagining Steps gathered in New York on Sunday for the film’s premiere, less than two weeks before it arrives on the streaming service on November 20.
Netflix shared arrivals from the event on its official X account, including a reunion of Beef co-stars Ali Wong and Young Mazino. “BEEF costars Ali Wong and Young Mazino reunite at the premiere of STEPS!” the streamer wrote. It also posted clips of Daniel Radcliffe, described as “Our Prince”, Amanda Seyfried as “Cinderella herself” and Stephanie Hsu on the carpet.
Extra TV reported that Bette Midler also attended the New York premiere alongside Seyfried, Radcliffe, Wong and Hsu.
Steps tells the Cinderella story from the point of view of her so-called “evil” stepsisters. According to Netflix’s official synopsis, Lilith, voiced by Wong, steals the Fairy Godmother’s magic wand and hijacks the Royal Ball with her sister Margot, voiced by Hsu, breaking the familiar story and dooming the kingdom to the tyrannical rule of the villainous Priscilla, voiced by Nikki Glaser. Lilith must then team up with Cinderella to fight biker trolls, outrun evil henchmen and escape the Screaming Woods to save the kingdom and their relationship.
The film is directed by Alyce Tzue, a Student Academy Award gold medal winner, and John Ripa, co-director of Raya and the Last Dragon. “I wanted to flip the fairy tale that usually focuses on the protagonist who gets the magic, and put that lens on these Asian sisters, who resonated with me, and ask, ‘Why didn’t they get the magic?'” Tzue told Netflix’s Tudum.
According to Netflix, the voice cast also includes Radcliffe as the Prince, Mazino as Gef, Peter Dinklage as Roderick, Midler as the Fairy Godmother and WWE star Damian Priest as Cracktor. Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell and Kim Lessing produce, with original songs by JENNIE, Rose Gray, EMEI and Seyfried, written and produced by Justin Tranter. Kris Bowers composed the score.
Steps premieres on Netflix on November 20.
