LOS ANGELES, November 7 (LNA) – Netflix has released the title sequence for its adult animated series Bass X Machina, set to “Honor Killing”, the theme song performed by Janelle Monáe.
The streamer shared the opening on its official X account on Saturday, writing: “Welcome to the Steampunk West. Here’s the title sequence for BASS X MACHINA, featuring ‘Honor Killing’ by Janelle Monáe.” The sequence shows a silhouetted rider on horseback against bold red, blue and cream geometric patterns.
The six-episode series premiered on Netflix on November 3. Created by LeSean Thomas and animated by Studio Mir, it is inspired by Bass Reeves, one of the first Black US Deputy Marshals west of the Mississippi River, and reimagines him in a supernatural steampunk Western.
Netflix’s synopsis reads: “In a steampunk West overrun by outlaws, machines and supernatural forces, a father is forced to become judge, jury and executioner to protect his family.”
Brian Tyree Henry voices Bass Reeves and is also an executive producer. Monáe voices Glory Reeves, Bass’s wife. The voice cast also includes Tati Gabrielle as Dana, Cree Summer as Ahni, Chaske Spencer as Lighthorse, Currie Graham as General Rivenbark and Starletta DuPois as Etta.
“Honor Killing” was written by Roman GianArthur and Nate Wonder, according to Film Music Reporter. Netflix Music released a soundtrack album on November 3 featuring GianArthur’s original score, the main title song and a track by Baby Rose. Netflix released an animated music video for the song on November 5.
In the first episode, the US Army summons bounty hunter Bass Reeves to Fort Hope to retrieve a missing scientist and stop a second Civil War, according to Netflix’s episode guide.
Bass X Machina is streaming on Netflix now as a limited series; no further season has been announced.
