WASHINGTON, November 4, 2026 – President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the war with Iran had been worth it, even as he accepted that the conflict was largely to blame for his Republican Party losing control of both houses of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
Asked at the White House whether he believed the war was worth it, Mr Trump replied: “I do. Yeah. I mean, well, you have no choice.” He added: “The Iran thing we had to do, and we continue to do it,” Anadolu Agency reported. BRICS News summed up the remarks in a post on X, saying the president had acknowledged that the Iran war largely caused the defeat but said “it was worth it”.
Mr Trump was responding to Vice President JD Vance, who wrote in a lengthy post on X that “the reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night.” Mr Vance added: “If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay,” ABC News reported. Mr Trump called the assessment “largely true because it drove the gasoline up”.
“At the same time, if I had to do it again, I’d have to do it again because, long term, it’s the only answer. You can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon,” he said, according to Anadolu. “I can tell you that as far as that war is concerned, I would have done nothing different.” He also repeated his view that Republicans would have won had he been on the ballot, saying “you couldn’t transfer that love”, CNA reported.
On election night, Mr Trump told Fox News: “I think a part of it was Iran. But at the same time, people understood the importance of what I’ve done with Iran.” He said voters were reacting to fuel costs rather than the conflict itself: “I don’t think it’s the war… I think it’s the gasoline price,” Stars and Stripes reported. He told The Wall Street Journal: “I did the right thing. I would have done it again.”
BRICS News separately reported that Mr Trump said the US had not finished its mission in Iran. Asked about further military action, he said: “Certainly if Iran doesn’t behave, I will. And if they do, you know, we can sign something up,” Fox News reported, adding that he had not decided on new strikes: “Maybe I will, maybe I won’t.”
The war, which began in late February, has resulted in 11 US combat deaths and 12 deaths classified as non-hostile, with more than 850 US troops injured, according to Defense Department figures cited by Stars and Stripes. In a Fox News survey taken between October 19 and election day, 74 per cent of respondents said it was a crucial or major factor in their vote for Congress. The ABC News Voter Poll found that 34 per cent of House voters called the war “crucial” to their vote, against 49 per cent who said the same of the cost of living.
Mr Trump also ruled out replacing War Secretary Pete Hegseth, telling reporters, “No. I think he’s doing a very good job,” Fox News reported, after Republican Senator Thom Tillis warned that Mr Hegseth faced “a reckoning” in Congress. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed that Democrats would use their new majorities to end the conflict: “Look, we are gonna end the war.”
