LOS ANGELES, November 3, 2026 — Netflix is adapting Prep, Curtis Sittenfeld’s bestselling 2005 debut novel, into a coming-of-age series written by Nicole Taylor, the screenwriter behind the streamer’s hit limited series One Day, Netflix shared on X.
The series has received a straight-to-series order. It follows scholarship student Lee Fiora through her high school years at Ault, a prestigious fictional boarding school in New England, as she navigates friendship, crushes and class as a fish out of water among her privileged, confident classmates.
Taylor, a BAFTA TV Award winner, will serve as writer and showrunner. She will executive produce alongside Will Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum and Alix Taylor of Gloria Sanchez Productions, and Sittenfeld herself. Deadline, which first reported the order, said the show will use a half-hour format but is a drama rather than a comedy, and that a writers’ room is due to open in January.
“The 22-year wait was worth it”
Both writers said the project had been a long time coming. “Prep is my all time favourite novel and I have longed to adapt it for the entire twenty years since I first read it and found myself reflected uncannily back,” Taylor said in a statement. “I am overjoyed to be adapting for Netflix.”
Sittenfeld was equally delighted. “I’m overjoyed that Netflix is making Prep as a TV show — the 22-year wait was worth it!” she said. “Nicole Taylor’s scripts are truly brilliant. Nicole’s adaptation makes me understand my own novel, and myself, better.”
Published by Random House in January 2005, Prep spent weeks at the top of the New York Times bestseller list and became a modern classic of the campus novel, according to Netflix’s Tudum site. Sittenfeld’s own experiences at boarding school heavily inspired the book. An earlier attempt by HBO to adapt it as a comedy series about a decade ago did not move forward, Deadline reported.
Part of a growing young adult slate
Taylor created One Day, starring Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod, which aired on Netflix in 2024. Her other credits include the film Wild Rose and the television dramas Three Girls and The White Queen.
Prep joins Netflix’s young adult line-up, which includes Outer Banks, Ginny & Georgia and My Life with the Walter Boys, as well as upcoming series The Sticks, The Body and Poser. No cast or release date has been announced yet.
