LOS GATOS, October 29, 2026 – Netflix has renewed its Emmy-winning political thriller The Diplomat for a fifth season, the streamer announced on Thursday, just two weeks after Season 4 premiered on the platform.
Netflix shared the news on its official X account at 6:30 a.m. Pacific Time with a simple message, “The Diplomat has been renewed!”, alongside an image of star Keri Russell, in character as Ambassador Kate Wyler, slumped against a wall and holding up a yellow legal pad that reads “Renewed for Season 5.”
No plot details, cast changes or release window for the new season have been announced yet.
Strong numbers for Season 4
The renewal follows a solid run for the fourth season, which debuted on October 15. According to Deadline, Season 4 opened with 4.8 million views in its first week, in line with Season 3. Variety reported that the new season climbed to third place on Netflix’s Global Top 10 in its second week and entered the Top 10 in 63 countries.
The series has been a dependable hit since it launched in 2023. Season 1 drew 173.46 million viewing hours in its first four weeks, according to Netflix, while Season 2 spent four weeks in the global Top 10. Netflix also renewed the show for Season 4 back in May 2025, before Season 3 had even premiered.
Where the story stands
Created by showrunner Debora Cahn, The Diplomat follows Kate Wyler (Russell), the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, and her husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), now the U.S. Vice President. Season 4 leaned heavily on the series’ second married couple, President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) and First Gentleman Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford), a pairing that reunited the two West Wing veterans.
Netflix’s official description of the eight-episode season says one catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate brokered between the U.S. and U.K., while Grace and Hal’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon pushes the United States toward war. (Spoiler warning.) The season ended on a major cliffhanger, with Kate dramatically resigning from her post in the middle of a G7 meeting in Italy, as reported by Deadline.
The fourth season also introduced Jodie Whittaker as British Prime Minister Bethan Vaughn. Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn and Nana Mensah co-star as Stuart Hayford, Eidra Park and White House Chief of Staff Billie Appiah.
Production expanded for Season 4, with filming in more than 15 cities and towns across Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States, according to Netflix. The final two episodes are set at a fictional G7 summit in Italy, where filming locations included the city of Lucca and Villa Reale di Marlia.
No end in sight
There is no indication that Season 5 will be the last. Cahn told Deadline she has an idea of where the characters will end up, but not how long it will take to get there. “When I first pitched the series, I want it to be a living document. I want it to be a living organism,” she said.
Speaking to Deadline before Season 4 launched, Russell and Sewell joked about heading “somewhere very exotic” for a fifth season, with Sewell quipping “Trouble in Fiji” and Russell adding “A tiki bar.”
Cahn executive produces the series with Russell, Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah and Eli Attie.
All four seasons of The Diplomat are now streaming on Netflix.
