WASHINGTON D.C Sept 26, 2026 – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday restated his core demand that Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon, saying he was dissatisfied with the latest round of negotiations.
“They cannot have nuclear weapons,” Trump told reporters as he departed the White House. He added that he was “not happy” and “not thrilled” with how Iranian negotiators were approaching the talks.

The comments follow Trump’s address to the U.N. General Assembly earlier in the week, in which he framed a stark choice for Tehran: reach a deal that would allow Iran to rebuild or face possible annihilation of the current government. He has repeatedly said preventing an Iranian nuclear weapon is the central reason for U.S. military pressure that began earlier in 2026.
Indirect talks between U.S. and Iranian officials have continued, including meetings on the sidelines of the U.N. gathering and in Geneva. Trump indicated he would give negotiations more time but insisted Iran must not enrich uranium.
Iran has long maintained that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes and has denied seeking nuclear weapons. The White House has previously compiled dozens of instances in which Trump has made the same “no nuclear weapon” declaration.
Tensions remain high, with both sides keeping military options on the table while oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz continue under U.S. escort. A comprehensive agreement has so far proven elusive.
