WASHINGTON, D.C. July 2, 2026 – President Donald Trump completed his first flight aboard a newly retrofitted Boeing 747-8 on Wednesday, July 1, marking the inaugural operational flight of the aircraft now serving as the U.S. interim Air Force One. The plane was gifted by Qatar’s royal family and extensively modified for presidential use.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared the moment on X (formerly Twitter), posting photos from inside the luxurious cabin and on the tarmac. She wrote: “What a privilege to be aboard the inaugural flight on the brand new Air Force One! A truly unforgettable day. ✈️🇺🇸”
The nearly $400 million Boeing 747-8 was donated by Qatar in May 2025 as an “unconditional” gift to the United States. It underwent security, communications, and mission-support retrofits in Texas, funded by U.S. taxpayers at an estimated cost of less than $400 million. The exterior received the traditional red, white, and blue paint scheme with gold accents, while the interior features high-end finishes including beige and tan upholstery, dark wood accents, and premium seating.
Trump, speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland before departure, praised the aircraft:
“This is maybe the greatest commercial plane ever built… Frankly, we couldn’t build a plane like this because we wouldn’t be willing to spend the kind of money necessary. They spent top dollar.”
He described Qatar as “a country that’s treated us very well” and a key Middle East ally. The president noted that the previous Air Force One aircraft were 35–36 years old and that the new jet represents a significant upgrade.
The flight carried President Trump and his team to North Dakota for events including ceremonies related to the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora.
The gifted jet serves as a bridge solution while Boeing completes delayed next-generation VC-25B presidential aircraft, with deliveries now expected in 2027–2028. One older 747 from the existing fleet has already been retired.
Leavitt’s photos showed the opulent presidential cabin, including wood-paneled walls, built-in bookshelves, a large digital display featuring the presidential seal and American flag, and comfortable seating areas. Another image captured her with a colleague on the tarmac in front of the plane clearly marked “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”
The high-value foreign gift has sparked debate. Critics, including some Democratic lawmakers, have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, the emoluments clause, and security implications of accepting such a substantial donation from a foreign government. Supporters argue it provides a cost-effective, immediate upgrade to aging presidential transport and reflects a pragmatic diplomatic relationship with Qatar.
The White House has stated that the aircraft complies with all applicable laws and that, after Trump’s presidency, it is expected to be transferred to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation.
Leavitt’s post quickly gained significant engagement, with thousands of likes and comments ranging from congratulations to criticism of the plane’s origins.
This flight represents a notable shift in the appearance and capabilities of Air Force One as the Trump administration continues its term amid ongoing aircraft modernization challenges.
