SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA May 18, 2026 — Three men, including a security guard, were fatally shot at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday, authorities said. The two suspected gunmen, identified as male teenagers aged 17 and 19, were later found dead in a vehicle nearby from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
The shooting occurred around 11:43 a.m. at the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD) in the Clairemont Mesa East neighborhood. Police responded quickly to reports of an active shooter. Officers confirmed the threat was neutralized by approximately 1:07 p.m., with no shots fired by law enforcement.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl stated at a news conference that the three adult victims — two staff members and one security guard — were shot outside the mosque. The center, which includes the Al Rashid School, evacuated worshippers and students safely, with no children among the victims. Multiple injuries were reported, and patients were treated at local hospitals such as Sharp Memorial.
The suspects’ bodies were discovered in a vehicle near the scene. Authorities are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime. The FBI is assisting in the probe.
President Donald Trump was briefed on the shooting. In a statement shared by the White House Rapid Response account, he described it as “a terrible situation” and said his team would review early updates thoroughly.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria headed to the scene, and California Governor Gavin Newsom was also briefed. Imam Taha Hassane of the Islamic Center expressed shock, noting the community had never faced such a tragedy before and offering prayers for the victims’ families.
The Islamic Center of San Diego is the largest mosque in San Diego County, serving as a hub for daily prayers, education, and community activities. It has a history of prior incidents, including an attempted bombing in 1991.
This remains a developing story. Law enforcement has not released the names of the victims or suspects pending notification of next of kin. Investigations into the motive and any potential accomplices continue.
