BEIJING May 6, 2026 — Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared on Wednesday that his country has gained “elevated international standing” by demonstrating its military and strategic capabilities during the two-month war with the United States and Israel that ended last month.
Speaking to reporters after meeting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Araghchi said post-war Iran is “different from Iran before the war” because it has “proven its capabilities and strength.”
The remarks came as China pressed for an immediate end to regional hostilities and the swift reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most critical oil chokepoint, which was severely disrupted during the February 28–April 2026 conflict.
According to footage posted by Al Jazeera English, Araghchi told Chinese officials that Beijing recognizes the changed reality on the ground. “China believes that Iran after the war is different from Iran before the war,” he said. “It has proven its capabilities and strength, and therefore it has gained an elevated international standing.”
The two foreign ministers discussed Iran’s nuclear program, the lifting of sanctions, and broader efforts to stabilize the region. Wang Yi reportedly urged both Iran and the United States to work toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible to restore global energy flows.
The high-level meeting in Beijing occurs just days before U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit the Chinese capital, raising speculation that China is positioning itself as a key mediator between Tehran and Washington.
Iran has maintained that its actions during the conflict strengthened its negotiating position, while Western officials have described the war as a dangerous escalation that threatened global oil supplies and regional security.
No immediate comment was available from the U.S. State Department or Israeli officials on Araghchi’s latest statements.
