KUALA LUMPUR, May 1, 2026 — Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that there will be no change in the leadership of the Negeri Sembilan state government, with Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun continuing as Menteri Besar despite the withdrawal of support by 14 UMNO assemblymen.
Anwar urged all parties, including UMNO leaders, to remain calm and fully respect the directive from the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, who has instructed Aminuddin to carry on with his duties as usual.
The statement was made in response to the political crisis that erupted on April 27 when all 14 Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen from UMNO unanimously announced the withdrawal of their support for Aminuddin, citing a loss of confidence in his leadership.
The move came amid an ongoing royal and customary dispute involving the four Undangs (territorial chieftains) of Sungai Ujong, Rembau, Johol, and Jelebu. On April 19, the Undangs declared that Tuanku Muhriz had been removed from the throne and named Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar as the new Yang di-Pertuan Besar — a move Aminuddin dismissed as unconstitutional because one of the Undangs had reportedly been stripped of his title earlier.
The standoff escalated when the Undangs called for Aminuddin’s removal, leading to the UMNO assemblymen’s decision to pull support. This left the PKR-led state government operating as a minority administration with only 17 seats in the 36-seat State Legislative Assembly.
Aminuddin, who is also the state PKR chief and Sikamat assemblyman, had earlier met the ruler and reaffirmed his commitment to continue leading the state in line with the Yang di-Pertuan Besar’s wishes and the state constitution.
Anwar’s latest confirmation reinforces the federal government’s stance on upholding royal directives to ensure political stability and protect the interests of the people.
The development has drawn attention to the delicate balance within the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional unity government, particularly in states where coalition dynamics are being tested by local issues involving traditional institutions under the unique Adat Perpatih system in Negeri Sembilan.
As of now, no special sitting of the state assembly has been called, and the administration continues to function normally under Aminuddin’s leadership.
