WASHINGTON D.C April 26, 2026 – A heavily armed suspect was stopped at a security checkpoint outside the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner last night after opening fire and wounding a U.S. Secret Service agent, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred Friday evening at the Washington Hilton, where President Donald J. Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance were in attendance. The dinner was disrupted, and the president and his party were safely evacuated.

According to law enforcement sources, the suspect — identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, a teacher from Torrance, California — was armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives. He charged a checkpoint and fired shots, striking one Secret Service agent who was saved by his protective vest. The suspect was immediately taken into custody. No other injuries were reported.
In an official statement released early Saturday morning, U.S. Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn praised the agency’s rapid response:
“Tonight, a coward attempted to create a national tragedy. He underestimated the protective capabilities of the U.S. Secret Service, and was stopped at first contact. The strength of our layered security posture was evident, with a myriad of countermeasures still ahead. Grateful for the brave men and women of the Secret Service and our valued Law Enforcement partners.”
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, traditionally a major annual event for journalists, politicians, and celebrities, was placed on lockdown following the shooting. Attendees were instructed to shelter in place until the scene was secured.
President Trump was not injured and later issued a brief statement thanking the Secret Service and law enforcement for their professionalism.
The Secret Service and FBI are leading the investigation. No motive has been publicly released at this time.
