WASHINGTON D.C April 26, 2026 — President Donald Trump said Saturday night’s armed incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) Dinner was the work of a “lone wolf” with no connection to Iran, describing the suspect as a “sick person” who acted alone.
The shooting occurred around 8 p.m. on April 25 at the Washington Hilton, where Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, cabinet members, and roughly 2,600 journalists and guests had gathered for the annual black-tie event.
Law enforcement identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. According to multiple officials, Allen — a registered hotel guest — charged a Secret Service security checkpoint outside the main ballroom. Armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives, he opened fire, striking one Secret Service officer at close range.
The officer was wearing a bulletproof vest and is expected to make a full recovery. No other injuries were reported. Secret Service agents and other officers quickly tackled and subdued Allen before he could breach the ballroom. Trump and other officials were immediately evacuated.
Speaking at an impromptu White House press conference later that evening, Trump praised the swift response of law enforcement.
“I do not believe the shooter is affiliated with Iran,” the president said. “This appears to be a lone actor — a lone wolf whack job.”
Allen worked as a teacher and independent video game developer in Southern California, according to public records and law enforcement sources. He faces federal charges that include assault on a federal officer and using a firearm during a crime of violence. Additional charges are expected. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
The FBI and Secret Service continue to investigate the motive. No evidence of foreign involvement has been released.
The White House Correspondents’ Association said the dinner program was cut short but plans to reschedule the event.
This is a developing story. Life News Agency will provide updates as more details emerge from the investigation.
