KOTA BHARU April 18, 2026 – Good news for Malaysians as the first Petronas-chartered oil tanker has safely docked at the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex.
The arrival brings relief to the country’s energy supply chain, which has been under pressure due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s swift and direct engagement with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is credited with securing safe passage for Malaysian vessels through the vital waterway.
In an update shared by Jason Yew via X (formerly Twitter), the status of the Malaysian-linked tankers is as follows:
- One tanker has arrived safely in Pengerang.
- One tanker is currently en route.
- One tanker is stranded due to technical damage.
- Four tankers have received the green light from Iran and are awaiting clearance to proceed.
The video clip accompanying the post shows Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim addressing the nation, saying: “Alhamdulillah! Kapal pertama PETRONAS selamat tiba di Pengerang.” (Praise be to God! The first PETRONAS ship has safely arrived in Pengerang.)
The tankers in question, including the recently arrived Ocean Thunder, were carrying Iraqi crude oil destined for Malaysia. Iran had temporarily imposed restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened regional conflicts, but granted exemptions and safe passage to Malaysian vessels following Anwar’s personal diplomatic outreach.
Netizens and the public are now urged to continue praying for the safe return of the remaining tankers and their crew members.
This successful diplomatic effort underscores Malaysia’s proactive approach in protecting national energy interests and ensuring the uninterrupted supply of fuel, which is critical for stabilising living costs and supporting economic growth under the Malaysia MADANI framework.
Life News Agency will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on the remaining vessels.
