PUTRAJAYA, April 16, 2026 (Life News Agency) – Malaysia and Australia have reaffirmed and strengthened their cooperation to tackle the global energy and supply chain crisis, with a strong emphasis on building resilient supply chains, ensuring energy security, and maintaining open and stable trade flows.
Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim made the announcement today via his official X account, coinciding with the official visit of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to Malaysia (April 15–17, 2026). The two leaders signed a Joint Statement on Energy Security following their bilateral meeting.
“Kerjasama Malaysia dan Australia diperkukuh dalam mendepani krisis tenaga dan bekalan global, dengan tumpuan kepada daya tahan rantaian bekalan, keselamatan tenaga serta aliran perdagangan yang terbuka dan stabil,” Anwar posted.
He stressed that Malaysia’s top priority remains meeting domestic energy needs and safeguarding the nation’s economic resilience.
“Keutamaan kita tetap memenuhi keperluan domestik serta menjamin daya tahan ekonomi negara. Dalam masa yang sama, kerjasama erat dengan negara sahabat juga menjadi kunci memastikan bekalan tenaga kekal stabil dan berpanjangan,” he added.
According to the joint statement, both countries recognise their complementary roles as energy suppliers to each other. They have committed to promoting open, rules-based trade in energy products, exchanging views on energy trade matters on a “no surprises” basis, and deepening practical cooperation on energy security. The partnership also includes strengthening supply chain resilience through regional collaboration, supporting the energy transition, and promoting renewable energy resources.
Anwar clarified that Malaysia’s national energy company, PETRONAS, will continue to prioritise domestic requirements before supplying any surplus to Australia, while ensuring continued access to Australian liquefied natural gas (LNG), minerals and other energy resources.
The leaders expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in West Asia and its impact on global energy markets, prices and supply chains.
This latest agreement builds on the longstanding Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Malaysia and Australia and is seen as a timely move to safeguard long-term energy stability for both nations amid geopolitical uncertainties.
