WASHINGTOND.C, March 14, 2026 – President Donald J. Trump issued a stark warning to Iran on Saturday, vowing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by force if necessary and urging international partners to deploy warships to the region. In a lengthy post on X (formerly Twitter), Trump claimed the U.S. has already decimated Iran’s military capabilities but emphasized the need for multinational cooperation to counter potential disruptions in the vital waterway.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions in the Persian Gulf, where Iran has effectively closed the strait since early March in retaliation for U.S. and Israeli airstrikes that began in late February. The narrow passage, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, carries about a fifth of the world’s oil supply, and its blockade has driven up global energy prices and raised fears of economic fallout.
In his post, Trump stated: “Many Countries, especially those who are affected by Iran’s attempted closure of the Hormuz Strait, will be sending War Ships, in conjunction with the United States of America, to keep the Strait open and safe. We have already destroyed 100% of Iran’s Military capability, but it’s easy for them to send a drone or two, drop a mine, or deliver a close range missile somewhere along, or in, this Waterway, no matter how badly defeated they are. Hopefully China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and others, that are affected by this artificial constraint, will send Ships to the area so that the Hormuz Strait will no longer be a threat by a Nation that has been totally decapitated. In the meantime, the United States will be bombing the hell out of the shoreline, and continually shooting Iranian Boats and Ships out of the water. One way or the other, we will soon get the Hormuz Strait OPEN, SAFE, and FREE! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
The president’s call for allied involvement highlights ongoing U.S. efforts to form a coalition for naval escorts through the strait, a proposal echoed in recent White House statements. Trump has repeatedly threatened severe military action, including bombing Iran’s Kharg Island oil export terminal and demanding the removal of any mines placed in the waterway. On Friday, U.S. forces conducted strikes on military targets on Kharg Island, sparing oil infrastructure for now but warning of escalation if shipping interference continues.
Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who assumed power after his father’s death in U.S.-Israeli strikes, has vowed to maintain the blockade until attacks on Iran cease. Tehran has denied placing mines but has carried out attacks on vessels attempting to transit, citing self-defense against what it calls “aggression.”
Reactions to Trump’s post were swift and divided. Critics on X accused the president of escalating the conflict unnecessarily. Brian Krassenstein remarked, “He sounds clueless,” while Alex Cole called him an “idiot” for provoking the situation. Syrian Girl questioned if the strategy implied nuclear options. Supporters, however, praised the tough stance, with one user affirming it as “Real ✅.”
Broader commentary expressed skepticism about international buy-in. One X user noted, “No One Will Help Him. He Pissed Everyone Off,” pointing to strained U.S. alliances. Military experts have warned that reopening the strait could take weeks or months, depending on Iran’s tactics, and that the U.S. was unprepared for this scenario despite prior threats.
As global oil markets remain volatile, with prices surging due to the disruption, the White House has offered political risk insurance for maritime trade and reiterated its readiness to escort ships. However, the U.S. Navy has indicated that full escorts may not be feasible immediately.
The conflict, now in its second month, has drawn condemnation from various quarters, with calls for de-escalation growing amid fears of a wider regional war.
