KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA March 4, 2026 – The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) today announced the appointment of YM Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz as Senior Political Advisor (*Penasihat Kanan Politik*) to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The two-year appointment takes immediate effect today, March 4, 2026, and fills the vacancy for the position of Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister.
In an official media statement, the PMO said: “YAB Perdana Menteri menzahirkan harapan agar YM Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul dapat melaksanakan amanah yang diberikan ini dengan baik dan penuh tawaduk demi kemakmuran negara serta kesejahteraan rakyat.”
Tengku Zafrul, a former banker who served as Group CEO of CIMB Group, brings rich experience in finance and public service. He previously held the portfolios of Minister of Finance (2020–2022) and Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (2022–2025). He was appointed Chairman of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) in December 2025 and recently joined PKR’s Political Bureau after leaving UMNO.
The move is viewed as a strategic step to strengthen the Prime Minister’s close advisory team with proven expertise in economic management and investment promotion.
