VIENNA March 2, 2026 – Iran has accused the United States and Israel of targeting its strategic Natanz nuclear site during joint military operations carried out on Sunday.
Iran’s ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Reza Najafi, made the claim at a meeting of the agency’s 35-nation Board of Governors in Vienna on Monday. “Again they attacked Iran’s peaceful, safeguarded nuclear facilities yesterday,” Najafi told reporters. When asked specifically which facilities were hit, he replied: “Natanz.”
The Natanz complex, located in central Iran, is a cornerstone of Tehran’s uranium enrichment programme and has previously been the target of alleged sabotage and strikes.
The allegation was first highlighted in breaking reports by international media, including Al Jazeera.
IAEA Response
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated there is “no indication” that any of Iran’s nuclear installations — including Natanz — have been damaged or hit in the recent attacks. Grossi added that the agency has been unable to contact Iranian nuclear authorities for confirmation.
Broader Conflict Context
The reported strike forms part of a wider US-Israeli military campaign against Iran that Tehran says has killed hundreds, including senior officials. Iran has responded with multiple waves of missile attacks on Israeli targets and US assets in the Gulf region.
Iranian officials have vowed to rebuild any damaged facilities “with greater strength.” The situation remains fluid, with fears of further escalation and potential radiological risks being closely monitored internationally.
