KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA March 1, 2026 – – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has unreservedly condemned the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warning that the act has pushed the Middle East to the edge of grave and sustained instability.
In a statement posted on X on Sunday (March 1), Anwar extended Malaysia’s condolences to the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Iranian people following Khamenei’s death in US-Israeli strikes on February 28.
“I unreservedly condemn the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. This act places the Middle East on the edge of grave and sustained instability,” the Prime Minister wrote.
“I extend my condolences to the Islamic Republic of Iran and to the Iranian people at this profoundly difficult moment.”
Anwar cautioned that those who greet the death with approval must recognise the serious consequences of such actions.
“Existential threats seldom yield predictable reactions. The deliberate targeting of a head of state sets a dangerous precedent and weakens the norms and principles that underpin the international order,” he stated.
At the same time, he urged Iranian authorities to respond with the utmost restraint.
“Malaysia aligns itself with the statements issued by concerned countries calling on all parties to step back from further escalation,” Anwar added.
The Prime Minister’s foremost concern is the welfare and safety of Malaysians in Iran, the Gulf States and the wider Middle East.
“To all Malaysians in the affected region, your Government is taking every possible measure to ensure your protection. Our Missions have been given the full mandate and resources to assist you,” he assured.
The government will also urgently evaluate the economic repercussions of the conflict, including risks to regional airspace and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
“Malaysia’s trade and energy security are directly implicated, and we will act as necessary to safeguard our national interests,” Anwar said.
He called for an immediate ceasefire, the protection of civilians and a return to serious dialogue.
“This crisis cannot be resolved by force. It requires diplomacy, restraint and political will,” the Prime Minister concluded.
Khamenei, who was 86, was killed along with several family members and high-ranking officials during the joint strikes on Tehran, prompting Iran to declare 40 days of national mourning. The assassination has sparked global concern over potential wider conflict in the region.
Anwar’s statement comes as Malaysia continues to monitor developments closely while prioritising the safety of its citizens and national interests.
