KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA March 1, 2026 – Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has issued a strong call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire following the joint US and Israeli military strikes on Iran, which have escalated tensions across West Asia to a critical level.
In a video statement posted on his official X account today, Anwar warned that the ongoing conflict is dragging the region toward disaster and firmly urged all parties involved to return to diplomacy.
“Gencatan senjata yang segera dan tanpa syarat adalah keperluan mendesak susulan serangan Israel terhadap Iran yang kini mengheret Asia Barat ke ambang malapetaka,” he stated. (An immediate and unconditional ceasefire is an urgent necessity following Israel’s attack on Iran, which is now dragging West Asia to the brink of catastrophe.)
Malaysia, he said, “dengan tegas menggesa Israel, Amerika Syarikat dan Iran agar menghentikan segala tindakan provokatif dan kembali kepada meja rundingan diplomasi dan dialog.” (firmly urges Israel, the United States and Iran to stop all provocative actions and return to the negotiating table of diplomacy and dialogue.)
“Sebarang tindakan bersifat provokatif hanya akan mencetuskan krisis lebih besar, menggugat kestabilan serantau dan berisiko mengheret lebih banyak negara ke dalam konflik yang sukar dibendung,” Anwar added. (Any provocative action will only trigger a bigger crisis, threaten regional stability and risk dragging more countries into a conflict that is difficult to contain.)
The statement comes after US and Israeli forces launched coordinated strikes on Iran on February 28, targeting key leadership and military sites. Iranian state media confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several top officials in the attacks. Iran has since retaliated with missile strikes on Israeli targets and US military installations in the Gulf region.
Malaysia has consistently advocated for peaceful resolutions in the Middle East, emphasising dialogue over escalation. Anwar’s latest remarks build on his earlier comments condemning the initial strikes and expressing solidarity with affected communities, especially as Muslims around the world observe the holy month of Ramadan.
The Prime Minister’s office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are closely monitoring the situation, with priority given to the safety and well-being of Malaysian citizens in the region.
