KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA February 16, 2026 – As bilateral relations between Malaysia and the Republic of Tajikistan continue to gain momentum, recent developments highlight growing interest in cultural exchanges, trade expansion, and collaboration in critical sectors like water management, hydropower, and mining.
H.E. Ardasher Qodiri, Ambassador of Tajikistan to Malaysia, emphasized during a recent media briefing that cultural cooperation should form the foundation for stronger ties.
“Cultural exchange is more important than political and economic cooperation at this stage,” the Ambassador reiterated.
He noted that many in Tajikistan are aware of Malaysia but have limited exposure to its rich cultural mosaic, including the unique offerings from Sabah and Sarawak.
Practical steps to boost connectivity include Tajikistan’s ongoing visa-free policy for Malaysian tourists (up to 30 days, introduced in 2022), encouraging adventure seekers to explore the country’s majestic Pamir Mountains, ancient Silk Road sites, and eco-tourism spots.
On the economic front, Ambassador Qodiri highlighted promising opportunities for Malaysian private sector involvement in Tajikistan’s water, energy, and mining sectors.
Tajikistan remains a global leader in hydropower, generating nearly 98% of its electricity from renewable sources and exporting surplus power regionally. With Malaysia’s expertise in green technology, smart grids, and energy efficiency, potential collaborations could include knowledge exchange on climate-resilient projects and renewable energy innovation.
Mining stands out as a key area: Tajikistan is the world’s second-largest producer of antimony (supplying around 25% of global output), a critical mineral for industrial, high-tech, and defense applications—including semiconductors. The Ambassador suggested this could attract Malaysian interest in diversifying supply chains for strategic materials. Tajikistan also produces gold, silver, and high-quality cotton, while exploring joint ventures in other minerals.
Tajikistan is also at the centre of Water Action Decade where the 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018-2028 will take place from 25th to 28th May 2026 in Dushanbe, the Republic of Tajikistan.
With a lot of high impact, international level conferences going to happen in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, maybe it is time to plan to include an eco-tourism escapade too.
