BEIJING, May 14, 2026 (Life News Agency) — Chinese President Xi Jinping today urged both nations to strengthen bilateral ties, describing 2026 as a potential “historic, landmark year” that could open a new chapter in U.S.-China relations.
Speaking during bilateral talks with U.S. President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People, Xi said the two sides should “set the course for and steer the giant ship of China-U.S. relations” toward stability and cooperation.
The comments came as Trump, on the second day of a three-day state visit (May 13–15), held face-to-face talks with Xi — his first trip to China since 2017. The summit features formal ceremonies, private meetings, a planned visit to the Temple of Heaven, and a state banquet.
Key agenda items include:
- Trade imbalances, tariffs, and greater market access for U.S. businesses
- Regional security, including the ongoing Iran conflict and stability in the Taiwan Strait
- Technological competition and artificial intelligence
Trump has described the relationship as one that “is going to be better than ever” and has pressed for China to “open up” to American industry. Both leaders have signaled a shared interest in greater predictability and reduced tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
The meeting occurs amid global economic uncertainty and follows earlier agreements that paused parts of the U.S.-China trade war.
Further outcomes from the summit are expected to be announced later today or Friday.
Life News Agency will continue to monitor developments from Beijing.
