KUALA LUMPUR April 21, 2026 – UMNO President and Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today announced a special commemorative edition marking the party’s 80th anniversary, highlighting eight decades of struggle, nation-building, and resilience.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Dr Ahmad Zahid described the upcoming milestone as far more than a number. “11 May 2026 will complete eight decades of a struggle that has never stopped,” he wrote. UMNO was founded in 1946 as a mass movement opposing the Malayan Union and defending national sovereignty. From those early days, the party has played a central role in Malaysia’s journey from independence through development and modernisation.
The special #UMNO80 edition, titled “2026 — 80 Tahun ”, recounts UMNO’s history of sacrifice, leadership, and continuous effort that has shaped the country’s identity. “80 years is not just a figure, but a collection of history, successes and challenges that have forged the character of this struggle,” Dr Ahmad Zahid said.
Accompanying the announcement is a striking red-and-gold promotional graphic featuring the date “11 Mei 2026”, the bold “UMNO 80 Tahun” banner, and imagery of massive crowds waving Malaysian flags. The design also includes the UMNO crest and portraits of party leaders, symbolising the continuity of the movement from its founding against colonial-era proposals to its enduring role in modern Malaysia.
The graphic’s caption reinforces the party’s legacy: from a people’s movement in 1946 that helped defeat the Malayan Union, UMNO went on to help build a sovereign, developed, and progressive nation.
UMNO, the backbone of the Barisan Nasional coalition, remains a major political force. The 80th anniversary comes at a time when the party continues to position itself as a champion of Malay and Bumiputera interests while contributing to national unity and development under the current unity government.
Further details on anniversary events and the full special edition are expected to be released closer to the 11 May 2026 date.
