WASHINGTON D.C. – May 1, 2026 – President Donald J. Trump has declared that the United States will impose a 25% tariff on cars and trucks imported from the European Union, effective next week, unless manufacturers build them in American plants.
In a statement posted on X by the White House, President Trump said the move is in response to the EU’s failure to comply with a previously agreed-upon trade deal.
“I am pleased to announce that, based on the fact the European Union is not complying with our fully agreed to Trade Deal, next week I will be increasing Tariffs charged to the European Union for Cars and Trucks coming into the United States. The Tariff will be increased to 25%. It is fully understood and agreed that, if they produce Cars and Trucks in U.S.A. Plants, there will be NO TARIFF,” Trump stated.
The President emphasized that the policy is designed to accelerate domestic manufacturing. He pointed to a record wave of investment already underway, with over $100 billion being poured into new automobile and truck plants across the country.
“Many Automobile and Truck Plants are currently under construction, with over 100 Billion Dollars being invested, A RECORD in the History of Car and Truck Manufacturing. These Plants, staffed with American Workers, will be opening soon — There has never been anything like what is happening in America today!” Trump added.
The announcement continues the administration’s long-standing “America First” trade strategy, which uses tariffs as leverage to encourage foreign companies to relocate production to the United States, create American jobs, and strengthen the domestic auto industry.
No immediate comment was available from EU officials, but the policy is expected to spark intense negotiations between Washington and Brussels in the coming days.
