WASHINGTON, D.C. — May 24, 2026 – A suspect was shot and killed by U.S. Secret Service agents after opening fire at a security checkpoint near the White House on Saturday evening, according to multiple reports and statements from law enforcement.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. ET at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, one block from the White House grounds near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Authorities say the suspect approached the checkpoint, brandished a pistol, and fired toward Secret Service personnel. Agents returned fire, striking the suspect, who later died.
A bystander was also struck by gunfire during the exchange. Officials have not confirmed whether the bystander was hit by the suspect’s shots or during the Secret Service response. The bystander’s condition was not immediately released. No Secret Service agents were injured.
President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time and remained safe. The complex was placed under a brief lockdown as countersnipers and additional personnel secured the area. The lockdown was lifted once the scene was cleared. The FBI is assisting the Secret Service in the ongoing investigation.
CNN footage from the scene showed yellow police tape cordoning off the area, emergency vehicles with flashing lights, and law enforcement personnel on site as night fell.
No motive has been publicly disclosed, and the suspect’s identity has not been released as of early Sunday morning. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
This marks the latest security incident in the nation’s capital involving the White House perimeter. Officials urged the public to avoid the area as the investigation proceeds.
More details are expected as the investigation develops.
