PUTRAJAYA June 12, 2026 — The Election Commission (SPR) today announced key dates for two state elections (PRN) that are expected to be major political focal points this year.
For Johor State Election (16th Johor State Legislative Assembly):
- Nomination Day: 27 June 2026
- Early Voting Day: 7 July 2026
- Polling Day: 11 July 2026
The Johor State Legislative Assembly was dissolved on 1 June 2026 following a decision by Barisan Nasional (BN) to seek a fresh mandate on its own. Johor has 56 state seats.
For Negeri Sembilan State Election:
- Nomination Day: 18 July 2026
- Early Voting Day: 28 July 2026
- Polling Day: 1 August 2026
Negeri Sembilan has 36 state seats. The dissolution of the state assembly was carried out on 5 June 2026 following a political crisis in which BN withdrew support from the Pakatan Harapan (PH) state government.
Why Not Held Simultaneously?
According to the SPR, logistical factors, election staff training, and readiness levels were the main reasons the two states will not hold polls on the same date, despite the relatively close dissolution timelines.
Political Background
- Johor: BN, led by Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, has chosen to contest solo after deciding against a full coalition with PH. This is seen as an early test of BN’s strength in its traditional stronghold. Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional (PN) are also preparing to campaign aggressively.
- Negeri Sembilan: The dissolution is viewed as a counter-move by PH following the loss of BN support. It will test whether the PH-BN federal unity government formula remains solid at the state level.
Both state elections are expected to serve as important indicators of voter sentiment ahead of other upcoming state polls, such as in Melaka, and potentially the 16th General Election (PRU16). Major parties have already begun activating their election machinery.
The SPR urges all eligible voters to check their registration status and prepare for a clean, safe, and transparent voting process.
