BEIJING, CHINA May 20, 2026 — Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping today formally signed a series of bilateral agreements aimed at expanding cooperation across trade, energy, technology, and strategic sectors during Putin’s state visit to Beijing.
The high-profile signing ceremony took place at the Great Hall of the People, where the two leaders exchanged red-bound documents and shook hands in front of alternating Russian and Chinese flags. The event underscores the enduring “no-limits” partnership between Moscow and Beijing, timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation.
According to the Kremlin, approximately 40 documents were expected to be signed, covering intergovernmental, interagency, and commercial agreements in areas such as industry, trade, transport, innovation, education, nuclear energy, and media cooperation. A joint statement on further strengthening their comprehensive strategic partnership and a declaration on establishing a multipolar world order were also adopted.
Putin arrived in Beijing on May 19, just days after U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to China, highlighting Beijing’s active diplomacy with major powers. Bilateral trade between Russia and China has already surpassed $200 billion annually, with increasing use of national currencies (rubles and yuan) to reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar.
Key areas of focus include advancing the stalled Power of Siberia 2 natural gas pipeline project, which could significantly boost Russian energy exports to China, as well as cooperation in nuclear energy and dual-use technologies.
In remarks, both leaders emphasized the stabilizing role of their partnership amid global challenges, including Western sanctions on Russia. The visit is seen by analysts as a further step toward a more multipolar international order, with stronger economic and security ties between the two nations.
This development comes as Russia seeks to diversify its economic partnerships and China aims to secure energy supplies and strategic depth in response to shifting global dynamics.
Life News Agency will continue to monitor reactions and any further details from the summit.
