SELANGOR, 20 August 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim took time out of his schedule on Thursday to interact with young athletes and watch Muay Thai competitions at the ongoing Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) Selangor 2026.
In a post on his official X account, Anwar said he managed to spend time chatting with the athletes and observing the Muay Thai action.
“I was impressed to see the spirit, discipline and courage displayed by these young people,” he wrote. “Hopefully one day they will have the opportunity to represent Malaysia and bring glory to the nation’s name on the international stage, God willing.”
Photos shared by the Prime Minister’s Office show Anwar, dressed in a traditional batik shirt, posing with Muay Thai athletes in their gear, sitting ringside among officials and spectators, and participating in ceremonial moments involving the competition bells. One image captures an active bout inside the ring at the SUKMA venue, with a large crowd watching.
The Malaysian Games, hosted this year by Selangor, feature athletes from across the country’s states and federal territories competing in multiple sports.
Anwar’s visit underscores the government’s continued support for sports development under the Malaysia MADANI framework, with the hashtags #MalaysiaMADANI, #YakinMADANI and #SUKMA2026 accompanying his post.
