KUALA LUMPUR. MALAYSIA Dec 15, 2025 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim today officiated the launch of the book titled The Man Who Could Move Mountains – Reflections on the Social Activism of S.M. Mohamed Idris, a tribute to the late S.M. Mohamed Idris, a revered consumer and environmental activist in Malaysia.
The event, organized by the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP), took place this morning. In his speech, Anwar, who has known the late activist since the 1970s, described S.M. Mohamed Idris, or “Uncle Idris,” as a courteous, principled, and wise individual in addressing policy issues across various segments of society and generations.
He emphasized that this book not only records the late activist’s significant contributions to civil society movements but also serves as a treasure of knowledge that upholds values of moral courage, social concern, and commitment to justice.
Anwar also called on the social activist community to continue driving change, sustaining civic activism rooted in humanity, and using this publication as a reference and guide for future generations of activists.
The late S.M. Mohamed Idris, a native of Penang, was the founder and former president of CAP and Friends of the Earth Malaysia (SAM), and was recognized nationally and internationally for his struggles in consumer rights, environmental protection, and social justice over more than 50 years.
The launch of this book is seen as an important effort to preserve his legacy, especially in an era where the voice of civil society is greatly needed to bring about positive change.
