Petronas Must Compensate Putra Heights Fire Victims, Says Yeo Bee Yin

PUCHONG, Malaysia, July 1, 2025 — Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin has called on Petronas to take full responsibility for the losses caused by the Putra Heights fire, urging the company to provide comprehensive compensation to affected victims.

Citing the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) investigation report, Yeo highlighted that the fire resulted from pipeline failures due to cyclic stress and unstable soil conditions, which weakened the structure and caused gas leaks. Husdin Che Amat, DOSH’s petroleum safety division director, identified the terrain’s inadequate support as the primary factor.

While Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan ruled out sabotage, negligence, or criminal intent in the incident, Yeo disagreed, asserting that Petronas, as the pipeline owner, failed to maintain its assets adequately.

“Underground conditions should not excuse a large-scale structural failure of this magnitude,” she said.

Yeo emphasized that government and public financial aid has been insufficient to cover the physical, mental, and psychological losses suffered by victims. She demanded that Petronas compensate victims fully for their actual losses and conduct immediate structural assessments of its 2,623 km Peninsular gas pipeline network to prevent future incidents.

“Petronas must act swiftly to ensure such tragedies never happen again,” Yeo added.
