NEW YORK January 24, 2026 – New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani issued a grave warning on Saturday about the lethal risks of extreme cold weather, revealing that at least five residents had died that day as frigid temperatures gripped the city.
In a post on X, Mayor Mamdani stated: “Today, at least 5 New Yorkers lost their lives. While it’s still too early to determine the causes of death, it is a reminder that every year New Yorkers succumb to the cold. The danger of this weather cannot be overstated.”
The mayor emphasized ongoing city efforts to protect vulnerable residents, particularly the homeless population. “Our teams are scouring the streets, offering shelter to homeless New Yorkers, and helping bring people inside,” he wrote, urging citizens to report anyone in need by calling 311 for immediate outreach assistance.
The deaths come amid Winter Storm Fern, a major system bringing sub-freezing temperatures, snow, and dangerous wind chills to the region. Reports earlier indicated three bodies discovered on city streets in Manhattan and Brooklyn, believed to be homeless individuals exposed to the elements. Updated figures suggest the toll may have risen to five, potentially linked to hypothermia.
City officials have been preparing for the storm, with Mayor Mamdani holding briefings on emergency responses, including shelter availability and street clearing operations.
Public reactions on social media highlighted both support for the mayor’s outreach efforts and concerns over ongoing homelessness issues, including reports of individuals sheltering in precarious conditions, such as between parked vehicles.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the storm persists, advising residents to stay indoors and check on vulnerable neighbors.
