McLaren team-mates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri swapped wheel-to-wheel racing for a rather different kind of contest this week, joining Alpine’s Pierre Gasly for a game of giant UNO in the Formula 1 paddock.
Formula 1 shared on X a short clip of the trio playing with oversized cards, promising “guaranteed laughter” and pointing fans towards the full video on its YouTube channel. The clip on X runs for around 37 seconds, while the full feature, titled “Lando, Oscar & Pierre Face Off In Giant UNO!”, runs for just over seven minutes and was published on 19 October.
The post quickly found an audience. At the time of writing it had passed 200,000 views on X, with more than 4,300 likes and nearly 500 reposts, a reminder of how much appetite fans have for seeing drivers away from the pressure of qualifying and race day.
A familiar game with an F1 twist
The video is part of a wider partnership between Formula 1 and toymaker Mattel, which owns UNO. In November 2025 the two companies announced UNO Elite Formula 1, an officially licensed edition of the card game featuring drivers and cars from all ten teams, along with selected team principals, reserve drivers, circuits and helmets.
According to Formula 1, the first release includes more than 100 unique F1-inspired Elite Action cards, with over 1,000 unique cards available across colour and special-edition foil variations. The Core Edition Starter Pack contains 112 cards that play just like regular UNO, plus promo cards and booster packs. It is the second collaboration between F1 and Mattel, following the Hot Wheels product range.
At the time of the launch, Formula 1’s Chief Commercial Officer Emily Prazer said UNO was “one of the most loved games in the world which brings people together”, adding that she could not wait for players “to bring the competitiveness, drama, and excitement of Formula 1 to this iconic game”.
Light relief in a demanding season
The lighter moment comes during a testing campaign for all three drivers. Norris arrived in 2026 as the reigning world champion after clinching his maiden title at the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where he finished on 423 points, two ahead of Max Verstappen. This year, however, Mercedes have set the pace.
After the Singapore Grand Prix, Norris sits sixth in the drivers’ standings on 201 points, with Piastri seventh on 138. Gasly, who has been Alpine’s leading scorer, is tenth on 41 points. Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli leads the championship on 340 points, 102 clear of team-mate George Russell, and could be in a position to seal the title at the next round in Austin if results fall his way.
McLaren remain third in the constructors’ championship on 339 points, behind Mercedes and Ferrari, while Alpine are sixth on 68 points.
Next stop: Austin
Off-track content such as the UNO showdown has become a staple of Formula 1’s social media output, giving fans a glimpse of the personalities and friendships behind the visors. Norris, Piastri and Gasly are among the grid’s most popular figures online, and the trio’s easy rapport is likely to keep the clip circulating as attention turns to the next race.
That race is the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, which the circuit lists as running from 22 to 25 October. With six rounds remaining in the season and the title fight potentially reaching a decisive moment, the cards will be put away and the focus will return firmly to the track.
The full giant UNO video is available on Formula 1’s YouTube channel and on the official Formula 1 website.
