KAJANG, Sept 18 2026 — Kajang Prison and the residence of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak became focal points for local and international media today after His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, granted him a conditional pardon.
The Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister’s Department said the King consented to the pardon at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, held at Istana Negara.
Under the decision, Najib may serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to payment of a RM50 million fine. He must comply with all conditions attached to the pardon. Failure to do so will void the arrangement and require him to resume the remainder of the sentence in prison.
Najib, 73, has been serving his sentence at Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022.
A check by reporters found Prison Department personnel had set up a blockade along the access road to the prison’s main entrance to control movement in and out of the complex. Media personnel outside the prison were confined to a waiting area about 10 metres from the main gate.
As of 12.30 pm, there was no movement involving the former prime minister at the Kajang Prison entrance.
Najib’s residence on Jalan Langgak Duta in Kuala Lumpur drew more than 50 local and international media personnel after the announcement. Several police vehicles were also seen at the location.
Najib is serving a reduced six-year term from the SRC International case after the Pardons Board in 2024 halved his original 12-year sentence and cut the fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.
