KUALA LUMPUR June 10, 2026 — Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim extended heartfelt congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, as Modi surpassed Jawaharlal Nehru’s record to become India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Anwar praised Modi’s “years of dedicated public service and leadership in advancing India’s development, prosperity and standing on the global stage.” He highlighted the milestone as a “historic” achievement.
“Heartiest congratulations to PM Modi on this historic milestone of becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister,” Anwar wrote. “Malaysia values its close and longstanding friendship with India, and I look forward to continuing our cooperation in strengthening bilateral ties and expanding opportunities for our peoples.”
The Malaysian leader wished Modi “continued success” and the people of India “continued peace, progress and prosperity.” The post included a photo of the two leaders shaking hands on an airport tarmac in front of the Indian Prime Minister’s aircraft.
Modi completed 4,399 days in office on June 10, 2026, edging past Nehru’s record of 4,398 days for continuous elected service as Prime Minister. Modi first assumed office on May 26, 2014, and secured re-elections in 2019 and 2024.
This marks over 12 years of continuous leadership for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, a rare feat in India’s democratic history. Supporters credit his tenure with significant infrastructure development, digital governance initiatives, poverty reduction efforts, and elevating India’s global profile.
The congratulations underscore the warm bilateral relations between Malaysia and India, which encompass trade, investment, education, and people-to-people links. Both nations have collaborated on various fronts, including in ASEAN-India forums and economic partnerships.
Anwar’s message comes amid ongoing efforts to deepen cooperation, with both countries expressing interest in expanding ties in technology, renewable energy, and defense.
This diplomatic gesture reflects the personal rapport between the two leaders and the strategic importance of India-Malaysia relations in the Indo-Pacific region.
