PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA December 31, 2025 – The Malaysian Ministry of Transport (MOT) has unveiled a significant operational upgrade at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1, aimed at enhancing the flow of departing international passengers. Effective January 1, 2026, customs inspections by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) will be relocated and integrated directly at departure gates, promising reduced wait times and smoother boarding experiences.
Currently, JKDM conducts departure screenings using scanning machines in the post-immigration departure zone, a setup that has led to potential bottlenecks during peak travel hours. Under the new arrangement, passengers will undergo a more seamless process, with customs checks consolidated at the gates before boarding. This change is expected to minimize congestion in the departure area while maintaining high standards of security and enforcement.
The initiative is the result of close collaboration between MOT, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), JKDM, and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS). Officials emphasize that the relocation will not compromise safety protocols or customs regulations. Any attempts to export prohibited items will continue to face strict penalties, ensuring compliance with international airport best practices.
“This enhancement will elevate the overall passenger experience, accelerate boarding procedures, and promote efficient, secure, and organized operations at KLIA Terminal 1,” the ministry stated in its announcement. The move aligns with global standards for airport efficiency and is anticipated to benefit travelers amid growing air traffic.
MOT expressed gratitude to JKDM and MAHB for their partnership in implementing the changes, which prioritize public convenience and national airport functionality.
