The visit was announced on Friday by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. In a post on Instagram, Araghchi said the meeting would follow up discussions held during Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to Tehran earlier in the week. “Next week, these discussions and consultations will continue in Moscow with the participation of the presidents of both countries,” he said, according to Turkey’s Anadolu Agency.
Araghchi said he had hosted Lavrov for extensive talks on bilateral relations and major regional and international developments. The discussions focused on expanding political and economic cooperation, implementing existing agreements and strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between Iran and Russia, he said, adding that both ministers stressed the importance of continued consultations to protect shared interests and promote regional peace and stability.
During his visit to Tehran on October 19, Lavrov told Pezeshkian that Putin was expecting him at the summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in Moscow at the end of October, Russia’s RIA Novosti reported. “He is waiting for you at the summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum and expects that you will also hold a bilateral meeting there and continue the conversation you had in Bishkek, at the SCO summit,” Lavrov was quoted as saying.
Pezeshkian said at the time that he expected to travel to Russia for the forum and hoped to meet Putin. He asked Lavrov to convey his greetings to the Russian leader and thanked Russia’s leadership and people for their position on recent events. The eighth summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum is scheduled for October 27 in Moscow.
Iran and Russia signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty in January 2025, during an earlier visit by Pezeshkian to Moscow. Anadolu said the agreement provides a framework for closer cooperation in political, economic, security, defence, energy and transport matters.
The upcoming meeting comes at a tense moment for Tehran. On Friday, US President Donald Trump told a rally in Florida that Washington “may do another little Epic Fury”, referring to the name of the US military campaign against Iran, while several reports have pointed to preparations for possible renewed strikes after the US midterm elections on November 3.
Iran International also reported the planned trip on Friday, citing Araghchi. Neither Tehran nor Moscow has yet released details of the agenda for the presidents’ talks, or confirmed the exact date of the bilateral meeting, which would be the latest in a series of high-level contacts between the two partners this year.
