CYBERJAYA, MALAYSIA February 13, 2026 – Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is currently investigating the spread of false narratives and content containing 3R elements (religion, race, royalty) on social media related to a viral accident incident in Selangor.
According to a media statement issued by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on 13 February 2026, the incident has been manipulated in such a way that it has sparked racial tensions and threatens public harmony.
MCMC referred to the official statement from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Selangor, which confirmed that the incident in Kampung Sungai Jernih, Kajang, stemmed from a personal misunderstanding involving land issues and lorry access routes. It did not involve any elements of gangsterism or racism.
MCMC’s analysis detected coordinated inauthentic behaviour (CIB), where identical content was repeatedly disseminated in a short period across Facebook and TikTok platforms to manipulate public perception. Sensational narratives with added racial labelling are deemed serious and have the potential to disrupt public order.
To date, MCMC is scrutinising 40 Facebook accounts and 10 TikTok accounts to assist in the investigation.
MCMC emphasised that it will not compromise on the spread of false content or content that incites hatred. The investigation is being conducted under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which prohibits the dissemination of content that is false, threatening, or grossly offensive with the intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass others.
Strict action will be taken if any legal violations are found.
The public is advised not to spread unauthenticated information and to always refer to official statements from authorities such as PDRM and MCMC to prevent the spread of false information that could undermine social harmony.
