Chongqing and Malaysia Eye Deeper Cooperation in Sustainable Development

CHONGQING, China | September 19, 2025  — Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof, kicked off an official visit to Chongqing with a key meeting alongside His Excellency Hu Henghua, Deputy Secretary of the Chongqing Municipal Party Committee and Mayor of Chongqing.

Chongqing, a city steeped in history as China’s wartime capital during World War II, has transformed into a vital economic hub in Southwest China. With its rapid industrial growth, influx of foreign investment, and pivotal role in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Chongqing stands as a strategic gateway for regional trade and cooperation.

The meeting underscores the continued commitment of Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to strengthen Malaysia-China ties, building on agreements with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang to elevate bilateral relations to a more strategic level.

Fadillah highlighted significant opportunities for Malaysia-Chongqing collaboration, particularly in water resource management, flood mitigation, modern sewage systems, and sustainable urban development. Through shared expertise and technology, both sides aim to foster mutual benefits for the prosperity of their people and sustainable progress.
