BEIJING/OTTAWA, January 18, 2026 – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney disclosed that he held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the situation in Greenland and Arctic sovereignty, stating there was “much alignment of views” between the two leaders.
Speaking after a bilateral meeting in Beijing, Carney addressed concerns over territorial integrity in the Arctic region. “I had discussions with President Xi about the situation in Greenland, about our sovereignty in the Arctic, about the sovereignty of the people of Greenland and the people of Denmark,” he said. “And I found much alignment of views in that regard.”
The remarks come amid ongoing tensions involving U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated statements on acquiring or exerting influence over Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark strategic for its mineral resources and military positioning in the Arctic.
Carney’s visit to China signals a potential warming of ties between Ottawa and Beijing, with the leaders also discussing trade agreements, including reductions in tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.
The disclosure has sparked debate internationally, with some viewing it as Canada seeking broader alliances to counter U.S. pressure in the region.
